Keith and Steve Mitzak are twin brothers who share more than just a birthday, they share a love of sustainable agriculture and AquaSprout Farms is their brain child. Founded in 2016, AquaSprout Farms became the first commercial Aquaponics farm in Somerset County, New Jersey.
Aquaponics is the combination of recirculating aquaculture and hydroponics; both fish and plants are grown in one body of water in a closed loop system. Essentially, the fish provides nutrients for the plants and the plants, in turn, detoxify the water. It’s a method of farming which requires 90% less water and only a small fraction of the land used in traditional soil farming. Additionally, AquaSprout Farms produce is grown using organic practices.
An appreciation for nature and the outdoors was instilled in the Mitzak brothers by their mother, Eileen, through camping and skiing trips in the Northeast, summer vacations at the NJ shore, environmental clinics at the Outer Banks NC and fishing adventures in Hillsborough, NJ.
The AquaSprout Farm’s family extends beyond the two brothers. Their father, Danny and brother, Kevin help make up the rest of this hard-working team, along with two of their friends turned business partners, Anthony Rusin and Katie Towers.
The brothers attend several weekly farmers’ markets and offer their shoppers a myriad of greens, including: summer crisp lettuce, butterhead lettuce, romaine, kale, swiss chard, basil, arugula, microgreens, and even cherry tomatoes. That’s not even the best part. Since aquaponic produce is grown indoors, it grows year-round, making Jersey-fresh produce available any season. AquaSprout Farms also supplies their fresh tilapia to Metropolitan Seafood located in Lebanon, NJ.
The team strives to grow pure, nutritious and sustainable produce for their local community. Make sure to stop by for your new favorite, sustainable greens. Enjoy the bright, fresh flavors all year round!
Live Well. Eat Right. Stay Strong.
